Tire Blowouts: Causes and Prevention (Part 2)

Proper tire maintenance is one of the easiest ways that drivers can reduce the chances they will experience a tire blowout while driving.

Continuing from Tire Blowouts: Causes and Prevention (Part 1), in the following, some additional important information regarding tire maintenance will be provided. Specifically, while Part 1 of this blog was focused on examining some of the most common causes of tire blowouts, here in Part 2, we will delve into the specific things that drivers can do to minimize their risk of experiencing tire blowouts while driving (and this, in turn, can reduce their overall risk of getting into motor vehicle accidents).

What You Can Do to Prevent Tire Blowouts

Although some tire blowouts will result from manufacturing defects (in that the poor design or use of low-quality materials in manufacturing may increase the likelihood that tires will malfunction when even a little amount of stress is applied to them), in many cases, drivers can significantly reduce their chances of tire blowouts if they properly maintain their vehicle’s tires.

Specifically, this means that drivers can minimize their chances of tire blowouts by:

  • Regularly checking the air pressure in their tires
  • Keeping their tires’ air pressure at the manufacturer’s recommended levels (as found in the vehicle’s owner’s manual)
  • Rotating their tires according to the manufacturer’s suggested schedule
  • Regularly checking the tread on their tires
  • Replacing their vehicle’s tires when they have little tread left (and not waiting until their tires are completely bald before replacing them)
  • Thoroughly inspecting – and possibly replacing – their tires prior to driving in particularly harsh conditions (like, for example, on gravel or icy roads) or going on a long road trip.

Additionally, should you receive notice from a tire manufacturer that there has been a recall on your vehicle’s tires, you should get your tires repaired (or replaced) as soon as possible so you aren’t increasing your chances of experiencing a tire blowout and, in turn, getting into a serious car accident.
